After long discussions and extensive study of different ways we might be able to operate under current conditions, the ACMYC Council has concluded there is no other viable option but to cancel our sailing instructional program for the 2020 Season.
I know this has a big impact on all of our families, and we did our best to find a way to avoid this outcome. All of our proposed plans came up against the hard fact that in order to operate safely we need to be able to spread out, and we do not have the space to do this. In past years we have used the public beach to rig and launch our boats, and this summer we expect public beaches throughout the Cape to be under a lot of stress. We decided we could not take the risk of asking our children and instructors to follow strict protocols in a space that we do not own and cannot control. It is also important for the long term future of our group that we maintain good relations and avoid conflict with other users of town resources.
One of the great features of our sailing community is that it is multigenerational. For a lot of our families, summer is a time that children share with their grandparents, often staying with them for the season. This is an important part of our culture, and the way that many of our traditions are passed along. We have decided to put the health and safety of our loved ones first.
