General Sailing Programs

Opti Classes:   These classes are designed to teach the students a progression of skills from rigging their Opti, to points of sail all the way to right of way rules, knots and seamanship as well as Cotuit Harbor geography.

This is done by utilizing beach lessons, on the water drills, on the water games and long sails.

OPTI 1: An Optimist Pram class for beginner sailors. Ages 8 and up.

OPTI 2: Optimist Pram class-for all sailors who have had two sessions of OPTI 1 and/or have graduated to this level. (generally ages 9 & 10)

OPTI 3:   Optimist Pram class for all sailors who have had two sessions of OPTI 2 and/or have graduated to this level. (generally ages 9-12)

OPTI 4: Optimist Pram Class for all sailors who have had two sessions of OPTI 3 and/or have graduated to this level. (generally ages 10 and up)

Junior Sailing Program(JSP):

A class designed to transfer knowledge learned in the Optimist to new types of boats, Lasers, Cotuit Skiffs and 420s. Skills specific to these boats will be introduced.   JSP sailors are expected to have the physical strength to manage skiffs, lasers and 420's.

A goal of the instructional program is to encourage young sailors to sail outside of class.  As the JSP sailor gains skills  and confidence in the skiffs and lasers, they are encouraged to participate in the CMYC races as crew members and skippers.  The Jr. and Sr. Series are held weekly and are specifically intended for the young sailor.

(generally age 12 and up)

             Club 420 Recreational Class:

The Club 420 Class will learn the technical aspects of sailing 420's, while learning to
work as a skipper and crew.  Basic racing skills will be introduced.  This class is
intended for sailors who may or may not be interested or ready to race competitively.

This class is ideal for the older sailor who has completed a year or two of JSP.

             (generally age 14 and up)

Racing Programs

Opti Race Team: This class is designed to teach all elements of Optimist Racing.
Start techniques, racing tactics, wind conditions and roll tacking are just some of the skills that are learned.

Sailors will participate in several regattas during the season. Some of these may include the Hyannis Regatta, West Dennis and the Wianno Regatta.

Parents are required to help with transporting sailors and boats to the regattas.

420 Racing Team:

Team Members learn the technical aspects of sailing 420s. They learn how to fly a spinnaker effectively and to use a trapeze. They will learn how to prepare for a regatta, understanding lifts and headers, starting strategies, and the basics of team racing. They will also learn the fundamentals of Fleet Racing.   They will travel to other clubs to compete, as well as hosting home events. Team members compete in fleet and team racing events.

Requirements:  The race team members are required to have prior racing experience and be deemed capable by the racing coach. Parents of 420 race team members are responsible for transporting racers and will assist the coach in trailering and transporting boats to races and regattas.

Placement of sailors in different levels is at the discretion of the Program Director.
